Africa Cybersecurity Talent Gap Means Jobs Waiting

Africa’s digital economy keeps expanding fast, with mobile money users growing nearly six times over nine years. A new Mastercard-commissioned whitepaper expects digital payments across the continent to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030. Cyberattacks grew alongside that boom too, rising by more than four hundred percent over the same period. Yet the report points to something more hopeful: the Africa cybersecurity talent gap represents a genuine opportunity.

Why Africa Cybersecurity Talent Gap is a Career Opportunity

Roughly two hundred thousand cybersecurity roles across Africa currently sit unfilled, equal to nearly a quarter of the workforce. That is not just a gap to worry about, but genuinely thousands of career paths waiting to open. Mastercard’s new Africa Cybersecurity Center of Excellence aims to help close that Africa cybersecurity talent gap directly. It brings security teams together for shared training, scenario exercises and practical knowledge sharing across borders.

How Countries are Already Responding

Nigeria, home to one of Africa’s largest fintech sectors, saw a significant share of this year’s attacks. South Africa’s concentrated financial sector faced 12.6 percent of all observed cyber activity across the continent. Morocco has built one of the region’s more organised cyber governance structures, offering useful lessons elsewhere. Kenya’s report section, tied closely to the Africa cybersecurity talent gap, focuses on protecting systems supporting financial inclusion.

Collective action already shows real results worth highlighting here, beyond simply closing the talent gap. Interpol’s Operation Serengeti led to 1,209 arrests across eighteen African countries between June and August 2025. That same operation recovered roughly $97.4 million that had been lost to various cybercriminal activities regionally. Together, these efforts suggest Africa’s digital growth and its cybersecurity response can genuinely strengthen each other.
