Samsung Boosts AI Skills at JKUAT Masterclass

Samsung & JKUAT Launch AI Skills Masterclass

Samsung Electronics East Africa’s latest masterclass at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology [JKUAT] points to a bigger shift in Kenya’s digital economy. Young people no longer need technology training that only teaches theory. They need practical skills that connect directly to jobs, content creation, and business opportunities.

The digital media and AI skills technology masterclass brought together about 180 students at JKUAT, building on the Samsung Innovation Campus launched at the university last November. The programme is part of Samsung’s wider push to support AI skills in Kenya through structured youth tech training.

The first cohort includes 80 students taking part in a three-month learning journey. Half will focus on Artificial Intelligence, while the other half will study Advanced Coding and Programming. Unlike many short training courses, the students will earn a formal diploma from JKUAT, giving the programme more weight in the job market.

Why AI Skills Masterclass Matters for Young Creators

The event also showed how technology training is moving beyond coding labs. Students heard from digital media experts, product leaders, and creators on how AI, smartphones, software tools, and storytelling now work together in the creator economy.

The digital space is crowded, and talent alone is not enough. Students need to understand lighting, content strategy, audience building, editing tools, and how AI can improve production.

Josephat Ochiel, Regional Service Manager at Samsung Electronics East Africa, brought a personal angle to the discussion.

“Standing here takes me back to the exact place where these students are sitting today. Samsung Innovation Campus, formerly known as Samsung Academy, gave me more than technical skills; it completely shifted my perspective. I moved from a similar classroom into a corporate role at Samsung, making this a powerful full-circle journey,” he said.
