Airtel Money Kenya Limited has contributed KES 25 million to the Kenya Red Cross Society [KRCS] to support flood victims due to the heavy March-April-May rains. This cash donation will enhance KRCS’s efforts to restore livelihoods in the hardest-hit counties. The funds will help recover communities in the western and lake basin regions by revitalizing the fishing industry and improving fisherfolk’s entrepreneurial skills. In Eastern Kenya, affected farmers will receive livestock to rebuild their livelihoods. The initiatives aim to benefit over 20,000 households in these regions.
At the donation ceremony, Mr. Ashish Malhotra, Airtel Kenya’s Managing Director, highlighted the need for unity in aiding those affected by the floods. “This donation seeks to alleviate the hardships caused by the floods, aiding recovery and community rebuilding. We stand with the affected and commit to collaboration in times of need,” Mr. Malhotra stated. Mrs. Anne Kinuthia-Otieno, Managing Director of Airtel Money, echoed this, expressing gratitude for contributing to this vital cause and emphasizing the importance of collective action in restoring hope to impacted families.
Dr. Ahmed Idris, Secretary General of KRCS, expressed thanks for Airtel Kenya’s donation and ongoing support during disasters. He noted that the rains have resulted in 244 deaths and displaced approximately 280,000 people across various regions, including the Coastal area, Central, Nairobi, Western Highlands, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, South-eastern lowlands, and North-eastern.
