In the first quarter of 2024, Apple and Samsung dominated the smartphone market, each securing five spots in the top-10 best-selling list, according to Counterpoint Research. This was the first time the top 10 were all 5G capable, highlighting a shift towards advanced technology. Furthermore, the trend toward premium phones was evident, with seven out of the top ten priced at $ 600 or more.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max led the sales, marking its first time at the top in a non-holiday quarter, signalling a growing consumer preference for high-end models. All four iPhone 15 variants, along with the iPhone 14, made the top 10 list. The iPhone 15 lineup occupied the top three positions, with the Pro models driving over 60% of Apple’s sales value, thanks to features like dynamic island interface, advanced chipsets, smooth displays, titanium chassis, and telephoto cameras.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series also performed well, with the Ultra variant ranking fifth and the base model ninth. This success was partly due to Samsung’s early update of the series and the introduction of generative AI features, enabling unique content creation and enhanced user interaction.

As consumers keep their phones longer due to fewer feature differentiations, there’s a shift towards high-end models to maintain technological relevance. We expect the top 10 bestsellers to continue dominating sales as manufacturers focus on premium features, including generative AI.
