Cybersecurity threats across Africa are expanding in complexity, targeting both everyday consumers and critical institutions. Recent security analyses by ESET reveal two distinct regional patterns across the continent. In Kenya, cybercriminals frequently target high-profile government bodies and national infrastructure. In contrast, attacks in South Africa span a broader footprint, affecting local municipalities, financial services, and telecommunications providers. Recognizing how these threats operate is critical for building resilient digital defenses.

Understanding African Cybersecurity Threats and Target Patterns

Although ransomware volume in East Africa appears relatively low, the targets chosen by threat actors carry immense strategic value. Cybercriminals employ double extortion tactics, threatening to leak sensitive internal documents on public data leak sites if ransoms are not paid. As Allan Juma, Lead Cybersecurity Engineer at ESET East Africa, noted during a threat overview webinar, these groups operate like structured commercial enterprises, utilizing initial access brokers, network reconnaissance specialists, and extortion operators to stage high profile ransomware attacks.

Despite aggressive pressure, security experts strongly advise against paying ransom demands. Paying criminals does not guarantee data recovery and directly funds illicit operations. Furthermore, modern incident response teams often possess decryption tools to restore locked systems. Fast remediation efforts such as taking compromised portals offline and clearing threat vectors within 24 hours have successfully mitigated damage for multiple targeted entities across the continent.

Opportunistic attacks also remain widespread. Script-driven screen locks often target small businesses and home users with alarming pop-up messages. These attacks rely on fear rather than technical sophistication, tricking victims into paying for unnecessary fixes when standard security hygiene would suffice.

Implementing EDR Killers Prevention and Legacy System Security Strategy

To execute large-scale encryption undetected, sophisticated syndicates now deploy tools known as EDR killers. These malicious utilities temporarily disable or blind endpoint detection and response software on target devices. Attackers frequently abuse legitimate, vulnerable software drivers or exploit older operating systems to bypass standard protections. Emerging malware variants have even begun leveraging generative artificial intelligence to troubleshoot installation steps and maintain persistent control over infected mobile devices.

When asked how organizations running older hardware can protect themselves, Tony Anscombe, Chief Security Evangelist at ESET HQ, emphasized network segmentation over exposure:

“If you’ve got that old OS in business, you need to be pushing that out onto a secure segment so somebody can’t go from there across to the rest of your network infrastructure.” says Anscombe.

  • Prioritize Patching: Regularly update system drivers to block software vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.
  • Leverage Threat Intelligence: Use updated threat feeds to identify malicious indicators and stop intrusions early.
