DESIREE’s “Intersexy” EP: A Sonic Journey of Emotion

In an era where technology has revolutionized the creative process, South African producer and DJ DESIREE exemplifies how electronic composition can craft profound emotional journeys. Her latest EP, Intersexy, marks a bold step in her artistic evolution, intertwining her personal identity with cutting-edge musical innovation.

Drawing inspiration from avant-garde electronic composers she admired as a teenager, DESIREE leverages technology to redefine the boundaries of house music. Intersexy showcases her mastery in creating immersive soundscapes, offering listeners an emotional arc that bridges soulful resonance with experimental textures.

Exploring New Textures and Themes

The two-track EP serves as a testament to DESIREE’s aspiration to push artistic boundaries while staying true to her roots.

The opening track, “Khuluma Nami” [Zulu for “speak with me”], combines a pensive yet animated bassline with an intricate electronic backdrop. Featuring the tender vocals of Jabulile Majola, the track is an ode to self-expression and perseverance. “It’s about embracing personhood and pride while pursuing dreams,” DESIREE explains, encapsulating the universal human journey.

The title track, “Intersexy”, takes a more cinematic approach, blending orchestral strings with house music’s infectious rhythm. DESIREE describes it as “very different” from her earlier works. “Intersexy sounds like a house music track created with an orchestra. It’s a proclamation for those often overlooked and a reflection of my journey as an intersex woman in the music industry,” she says.

A Personal and Artistic Statement

Intersexy is more than an EP; it’s a narrative of empowerment and authenticity. DESIREE’s identity as a Black intersex woman from South Africa deeply informs her music. “Being someone who often performs in spaces where individuals like me are scarce comes with a significant sense of responsibility.” She shares. “I know I represent diverse groups who support me, and that drives my commitment to authenticity.”

Expanding Horizons with MMINO

Coinciding with the release of Intersexy, DESIREE is embarking on an Africa tour and launching her own label, MMINO [Sepedi for “music”]. The imprint aims to celebrate diverse sounds beyond Afro House, spotlighting DESIREE’s skills as an A&R and her dedication to music’s transformative power.

Her meteoric rise over the past year is underscored by accolades such as a standout remix of Selaelo Selota’s “Thrrr… Phaaa!” and her feature as the cover star of North American DJ Mag’s 2023 Future Star issue.

Technology Meets Emotional Depth

DESIREE’s work underscores how technology can amplify emotional depth in music. By combining electronic innovation with personal storytelling. Intersexy not only breaks new ground in house music but also elevates the genre’s capacity for profound expression.

As DESIREE continues to evolve, her journey serves as a powerful reminder of music’s ability to transcend boundaries. Both sonic and societal. Intersexy isn’t just an EP, it’s a landmark moment for an artist whose authenticity and innovation are shaping the future of electronic music.
