Motorola mass-produced the first handheld mobile phone in 1973, known as 0G phones. These early models were large, heavy, and primarily served business professionals with limited functionality and short battery life.

The 1990s brought compact and affordable mobile phones, expanding access. GSM standards introduced in 1991 improved call quality and enabled international roaming. Popular models like the Nokia 3310 became known for durability and long battery life, with text messaging becoming widely popular.

In Kenya, owning a mobile phone in the 1990s was prestigious, especially in rural areas. The early 2000s marked the advent of smartphones, with the BlackBerry and Apple iPhone revolutionizing the industry. The iPhone’s touch-sensitive screen, sleek design, and intuitive interface set new standards.

Samsung Electronics significantly impacted the smartphone market with its Galaxy series, particularly the Galaxy S III. The 2010s saw smartphones become ubiquitous, with high-resolution cameras, advanced sensors, and powerful processors transforming them into essential tools for photography, navigation, and entertainment. Innovations like fingerprint sensors, facial recognition, and augmented reality emerged.
