Google and the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy have launched the #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge. This month-long event in May encourages YouTube creators across Africa to share short videos showcasing their distinct views of the continent’s rich diversity and spirit, using the hashtag #DiscoverMyAfrica.
Chido Mpemba, the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy, stated, “#DiscoverMyAfrica allows African youth to globally share their stories and cultural heritage. Our partnership with Google enhances creative expression and discussions on content responsibility, digital preservation, and the influence of AI on Africa’s creative sectors. This supports our goal of a digitally-empowered Africa, leveraging cultural richness for economic and social development.”
The challenge invites creators to highlight various aspects of African life, including music, art, food, fashion, and landmarks. To celebrate Africa’s dynamic music scene, YouTube will host Music Nights in Nigeria and South Africa, featuring Afrobeats and Amapiano. Additionally, two playlists, “Africa’s Next Wave” and “Africa Superstars,” will showcase emerging talents and established artists.
Creators can also benefit from specialized workshops, including a Nollywood workshop in Nigeria and broader #DiscoverMyAfrica workshops, to improve their skills and increase their audience reach.
Addy Awofisayo, YouTube’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, said, “We are dedicated to supporting the diverse voices and talents of Africa’s creative community. These initiatives offer essential resources and platforms for African filmmakers, musicians, and creators to share their stories and engage with global audiences.”
