Experts stress the importance of technology and technical skills in addressing climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering sustainability. Friedrich Huebler, head of UNESCO-UNEVOC’s International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, emphasized the need for green and digital skills in the workforce to create greener economies and societies through technological solutions.
Speaking at the Huawei Green Development Summit at the Mobile World Congress [MWC] Barcelona 2024, Huebler highlighted the role of innovation in transforming energy systems, transportation, and industries. Soledad Patiño, Coordinator of the UNESCO Skills Academy, pointed out the necessity of partnerships with the private sector, like Huawei Technologies, to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and facilitate the transition from education to employment.
The summit, hosted by Huawei in Spain, showcased how green information and communication technologies are used to support sustainable urban development, nature conservation, bridging the digital divide, and more, with advancements in energy storage, smart grid systems, and carbon capture and storage [CCS] leading the way.
