Kakuzi has made a significant investment in community infrastructure by dedicating over KES 2 million to establish rainwater harvesting systems and 28 modern ablution blocks in several schools and public institutions across Murang’a County. This initiative reflects Kakuzi’s commitment to fostering quality education, enhancing access to water and sanitation, and advancing environmental conservation in line with the company’s broader mission to empower local communities and drive sustainable development.

The rainwater harvesting systems, which include a 10,000-litre tank at Gituamba Health Facility [Serving Ithanga Sub-County and neighbouring Kiambu County]. Two additional 5,000-litre tanks at the Murang’a South Registrar of Persons Office and the Murang’a South Sub-County Education Office, will help ensure clean and reliable water supply to these institutions. In total, these systems are expected to benefit over 1,000 community members and staff by providing much-needed access to water resources during dry periods.
In addition to the water harvesting facilities, Kakuzi has constructed 28 ablution blocks across seven local institutions. Including Ngimu EDCE Center in Kimorori, Githanji Primary School in Kabati, and Pundamilia Primary School. These improved sanitation facilities, designed to serve over 2,000 students and staff. They aim to create a healthier and more conducive learning environment.
“These water harvesting systems and sanitation facilities are part of our ongoing efforts to support healthier communities and sustainable water management practices. Our goal is to promote self-sufficiency and address local sanitation needs, especially during rainy seasons when water conservation becomes crucial.” Stated Mr. Chris Flowers, Kakuzi Managing Director.
The Role of Water Conservation in Sustainability
Water conservation plays a critical role in sustainable development. It helps secure essential water resources for future generations and supports resilience against climate-related challenges. Rainwater harvesting, in particular, reduces reliance on piped or groundwater sources. It allows communities to capture and utilize water that would otherwise go to waste. This is vital for regions like Murang’a County, where seasonal rainfall patterns can create periods of water scarcity.
By installing these rainwater harvesting systems. Kakuzi is helping to mitigate water shortages and lessen the community’s impact on natural water bodies. These systems exemplify how simple infrastructure can support sustainable development goals, such as clean water access [SDG 6] and climate action [SDG 13]. While fostering a sustainable water supply in a changing climate.
A Broader Strategy for Sustainable Community Development
This project is part of Kakuzi ongoing commitment to support local communities through initiatives that address key areas of health, education, and sanitation. In addition to its rainwater harvesting efforts, the company implements catchment preservation practices. It aslo promotes sustainable water access and environmental protection measures within the region.
By investing in these essential resources. Kakuzi aims to address critical community needs and support a brighter, more sustainable future for Murang’a County and beyond.
