M-KOPA & Turaco Insurance Cover 1 Million Kenyans

M-KOPA Kenya and Turaco Insurance Agency have reached a major milestone providing Hospital Cash insurance to over 1 million Kenyans in just one year. This health insurance is included at no extra cost with M-KOPA smartphones as part of their “More Than a Phone” initiative, helping Everyday Earners strengthen their financial security.

Medical emergencies push many Kenyan families into financial hardship. Over 5% of Kenyan households face catastrophic health expenses yearly, and across Africa, 14 million low-income families fall into poverty due to out-of-pocket healthcare costs. While government programs offer some relief, private insurance helps cover additional expenses.

After a successful pilot in January 2024, M-KOPA launched Hospital Cash insurance with its X-20 smartphone in June 2024. Every M-KOPA smartphone now comes with a year of coverage, providing KES 1,000 per night for hospital stays at registered facilities. This safety net helps customers focus on their goals without financial stress during medical emergencies.

“Our customers told us how unexpected medical bills disrupt their progress,” said Martin Kingori, General Manager, M-KOPA Kenya. “Through our partnership with Turaco, we provide a crucial safety net to keep them on track financially.”

Customer impact stories highlight the program’s success. Boniface Mutiso shared, “Insurance was the main reason I chose my phone. I received KES. 7,000 within two days of my claim, which helped me support my family after my hospital stay.”

A new impact report from M-KOPA and Turaco reveals:
  • Improved access: 75% of customers had no prior health insurance.
  • Business growth: Over half report investing more in their businesses due to financial security.
  • Financial confidence: 50% of women feel less financial anxiety.
  • Claims support: 75% of claimants say the insurance helped cover daily expenses.

“Our mission is to make insurance accessible and affordable,” said Ted Pantone, CEO of Turaco. “This partnership shows how embedding insurance in everyday products can transform lives and build financial resilience.”

Building on this success, M-KOPA and Turaco plan to expand into new markets, starting with Ghana, while continuing to develop innovative financial solutions for underserved communities across Africa.
