M-Pesa Foundation Invests in Murang’a Community

M-Pesa Foundation launched a KES 30 million project to upgrade infrastructure at Karimamwaro Primary School in Murang’a County. The project includes renovating six classrooms [Grades 1–6], building three Junior Secondary classrooms, and renovating an Early Childhood Development Education [ECDE] Centre.

Dr. Andrew Karanja, CS for Agriculture and Livestock Development, and Joe Ogutu, Safaricom Foundation Chairman, attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a KES 30 million project at Karimamwaro Primary School, Kandara, Murang’a County, on December 10, 2024. The project includes building a science lab, library, and ablution blocks, installing a water harvesting system, and renovating classrooms.

Additional facilities include a new science lab, a fully equipped library, ablution blocks for boys, girls, and staff, as well as a water harvesting system with storage tanks.

Joseph Ogutu, Chairman of Safaricom Foundation, emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to improving education, health, and economic empowerment. Since 2010, it has supported over 1.3 million learners across Kenya through school renovations. This is in addition to the M-Pesa Foundation Academy for disadvantaged children.

Since 2010, the M-PESA Foundation has supported large-scale, impactful social projects in Kenya. It has focussed on Health, Education, Environmental Conservation, and Integrated Livelihoods. It has positively impacted over 2 million people.

Integrated Livelihoods: In partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, the Foundation rehabilitated the Nyalani Dam in Kwale County. This has enhanced food security and livelihoods in Kinango.

Health: Initiatives include Uzazi Salama, a maternal and newborn health project, and Daktari Smart, a telemedicine program for children in remote counties.

Education: The Foundation supports bright, underprivileged students through the M-PESA Foundation Academy.

Environmental Conservation: Key projects include fencing the Mau Eburu Forest to prevent human-wildlife conflict. Partnering with Reteti Elephant Sanctuary to protect orphaned elephants. In addition to working with NRT to conserve the Roan Antelope population in Ruma National Park.
