Safaricom has solidified its commitment to Kenyan sports by announcing a KES 5 million sponsorship for the 2025 Magical Kenya Open [MKO]. This prestigious golf tournament, a part of the DP World Tour, will take place at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi from February 20th to 23rd, 2025. Safaricom’s role as the official technology partner will ensure seamless connectivity throughout the event.
The telecommunications giant will provide crucial technological support, including a mobile cell site [Cell on Wheels or COW] to boost network capacity. This enhanced connectivity will facilitate live broadcasting of the tournament to a global audience. Safaricom will also equip officials with 4G-enabled scoring devices, ensuring real-time updates and efficient management of the tournament. Furthermore, they will provide airtime to support communication among organizers, players, and media personnel.
Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO, emphasized the company’s long-standing dedication to sports development in Kenya, particularly golf. He highlighted their decade-long support for the MKO, showcasing their commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting the sport. The 2025 MKO will feature 150 golfers, including a strong contingent of 19 Kenyan players. These include 13 professionals, four amateurs, and two juniors, demonstrating the breadth of golfing talent in the country. Notable Kenyan players like Njoroge Kibugu, Balala Adel, and Daniel Nduva will compete for a share of the impressive $2.5 million prize purse.
