Crown Paints Kenya PLC has amplified its commitment to environmental sustainability by launching an expansive mangrove restoration initiative in Tsunza, Kwale County. Partnering with the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya. This project is part of Crown Paints’ Environmental, Social, and Governance [ESG] mission. It demonstrates a hands-on approach to addressing climate change and supporting coastal resilience.
Richard Muturi, Group Chief Operations Officer, emphasized the critical role of mangrove forests in preserving Kenya’s coastline and supporting the global climate. “Mangroves act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing substantial amounts of CO₂. This makes them essential in the fight against global warming.” Muturi explained.

Mangroves, Nature’s Carbon Sinks
The company’s data highlights the environmental impact. A mature hectare of mangroves can sequester up to 840 metric tonnes of CO₂ over its 25-year lifespan. While each mangrove tree captures roughly 308 kg of CO₂ throughout its lifetime. With an anticipated 85% survival rate for newly planted trees. Crown Paints’ efforts are projected to offset around 773 tonnes of CO₂. A testament to its dedication to meaningful environmental action.
Beyond ecological benefits, this initiative aligns with Crown Paints’ commitment to social empowerment, creating a sustainable ecosystem that fuels local economies, fisheries, and ecotourism key pillars of resilience in coastal communities. By actively involving local residents, the project encourages community partnership in conservation, strengthening livelihoods while fostering a collective responsibility for natural resources.
