Microsoft Corp. and G42 have announced a significant partnership with the Republic of Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy to advance digital infrastructure in Kenya. This collaboration includes an initial $1 billion investment, led by G42, to enhance digital services and infrastructure. A key project is the construction of a green data center in Olkaria, Kenya, which will support the Microsoft Azure East Africa Cloud Region.
State-of-the-Art Green Data Center and Cloud Services
G42, with its partners, will design and build a cutting-edge data center in Olkaria. This facility will be powered by renewable geothermal energy and equipped with advanced water conservation technology. The data center will host the new East Africa Cloud Region for Microsoft Azure, promising scalable and secure cloud services to boost digital transformation in Kenya and the wider region.
Presidential Endorsement and Bilateral Collaboration
During his state visit to the USA, Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership, highlighting the mutual benefits for the USA, Kenya, and the UAE. The collaboration aims to bridge the digital divide, foster technological innovation, and support a thriving digital economy in Africa.
Development of AI Models and Societal Services
G42 is developing a large language AI model in Swahili and English to meet Kenya’s unique needs. The partnership will also support local universities and research through entities like the Microsoft Africa Research Institute and the Microsoft AI for Good Lab. These efforts will address challenges like food security and climate resilience using AI technology.
East Africa Innovation Lab and Digital Skills Development
An East Africa Innovation Lab will be established in Nairobi to support startups and entrepreneurs in developing cloud and AI services. Microsoft and G42 will also provide extensive digital and AI skills training across Kenyan society, targeting government employees, cybersecurity professionals, and young entrepreneurs.
Enhancing Internet Connectivity and Digital Safety
The partnership aims to extend internet connectivity across Kenya, with Microsoft working to bring last-mile wireless access to millions. G42 will support the development of fiber cable infrastructure. Both companies will ensure digital safety, privacy, and security through the establishment of a “trusted data zone” in the new data center, offering sovereign cloud services.
Commitment to Cybersecurity and Future-Ready Services
Microsoft will continue to provide cybersecurity support through its various centers, ensuring that customers in Kenya and East Africa are protected against digital threats. This initiative marks a significant step in Kenya’s journey toward digital empowerment and economic growth.
