Microsoft, Cyber Shujaa Train 100 in Cybersecurity

The Microsoft Africa Development Centre [ADC] in collaboration with Cyber Shujaa is launching a cybersecurity training program for 100 Kenyan students, aiming to enhance the country’s cyber-security workforce. This three-month course will enroll 70 undergraduates and 30 graduates with under two years of work experience. Participants will undertake eight cybersecurity modules through a blend of classroom and mentorship-based learning.

Catherine Muraga, Managing Director of Microsoft ADC, highlighted the program’s role in addressing the skill shortages in Kenya’s tech sector, noting that successful participants will receive two Microsoft cybersecurity certificates to aid their industry employment prospects.

Cyber Shujaa, a partnership including Serianu Limited, USIU-Africa, and the Kenya Bankers Association, has previously trained over 500 individuals in cybersecurity. Dr. Lola Omole-Odubekun, Interim Vice-Chancellor at USIU-Africa, expressed the initiative’s alignment with the university’s strategic goals to bridge the skills gap through specialized training.

William Makatiani, CEO of Serianu, noted the growth of their programs from eight students in 2016 to a nationwide initiative by 2021, emphasizing the partnership’s contribution to upskilling and employment in IT and cybersecurity. He added that the partnership with Microsoft ADC would expand their reach and impact.

The need for such training is critical as, according to a Kaspersky Cybersecurity analysis, 41% of global companies face a shortage of cybersecurity professionals, a gap further underscored by a World Economic Forum and ISC2 report. The Microsoft Digital Defence Report 2023 also underscores the increasing sophistication of cyberthreats, highlighting the essential roles of security training, strong partnerships, and AI innovation in maintaining digital security.
