Mike Smits Named EFTCorp Group Managing Director

EFT Corporation has named Mike Smits as Group Managing Director, solidifying his leadership in daily operations and long-term strategy. Formerly the CFO, Smits brings deep experience in business growth and market expansion. His appointment underscores EFTCorp focus on driving digital financial transformation across Africa. This is particularly in high-potential markets like Ethiopia, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC].

Smits says the new role allows him to concentrate on execution, market growth, and customer engagement. These are critical as EFTCorp expands into regions with strong demand for digital financial services.

EFTCorp is investing in local infrastructure, such as on-soil data centres. They also form partnerships with banks, fintechs, and governments to accelerate digital adoption. In countries like Ethiopia and the DRC, where banking infrastructure is underdeveloped, EFTCorp is introducing foundational digital payment systems. In more advanced markets like Kenya, it enhances existing systems with real-time transactions and improved interoperability.

The company customizes its approach by country. In some regions, it secures its own licenses; in others, it partners with local entities. This flexibility supports effective, context-specific solutions.

In Ethiopia, EFTCorp is integrating mobile wallets and card systems, while in the DRC, it’s launching low-cost solutions tied to public services like healthcare. In Kenya, the focus is on expanding digital payment options beyond mobile money.

Smits’ entrepreneurial mindset aligns with EFTCorp’s mission: to provide fast, affordable, and scalable digital solutions that support financial inclusion and economic development. “Our growth is the continent’s growth,” says Smits. “We’re here to help Africa’s financial sector transition into the digital age.”
