S24 FE: A Closer Look at Samsung’s Fan-Favorite Phone

The Samsung FE range was reintroduced in 2020 with the Galaxy S20 FE. Since then, it has included models like the S21 FE, S23 FE, and now the recently launched S24 FE, which is available in Kenya.

If you’ve heard about the FE line but aren’t familiar with it, here’s a quick explanation:

Samsung’s FE series offers a more budget-friendly alternative to its flagship devices. While these models are more affordable, they retain many of the premium features found in flagship phones, ensuring users don’t miss out on much.

S24 FE

The “FE” stands for “Fan Edition.” These devices are designed based on feedback collected from focus groups, enabling Samsung to create models tailored to the needs and preferences of their fans. Interestingly, the FE concept first emerged in 2017 not as a budget-friendly line, but as a response to the Galaxy Note 7’s battery controversy.

Design & Build

Larger Display & Overall Heavier Footprint

One noticeable improvement in the Galaxy S24 FE is its larger display. The screen size has increased by 0.3 inches compared to the S23 FE, now measuring 6.7 inches. This larger display is framed by a slimmer bezel, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Another notable upgrade is the display brightness. The S24 FE boasts a maximum brightness of 1,900 nits, making it much easier to use in bright daylight. The screen is also protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus+, offering increased durability.

However, the screen resolution remains unchanged at 1080 x 2340 pixels. While this results in a slightly lower pixel density due to the larger display, the difference is likely imperceptible during everyday use.

A larger display also means an overall heavier footprint. The S24 FE’s dimensions are 77.3mm x 162.0mm x 8.0mm and it weighs in at 213g. The original S24 is 70.6mm x 147mm x 7.6mm with a weight of 167g.

Power

Exynos 2400e Processor

The Galaxy S24 FE features a more energy-efficient chipset compared to the Galaxy S24. While the S24 is powered by the Exynos 2400 processor, the S24 FE uses the Exynos 2400e, a slightly underclocked variant designed for better power efficiency. The S24 FE also offers up to 512GB of storage, ensuring ample space for users.

In terms of battery, the Galaxy S24 FE comes with a significantly larger 4,700mAh capacity, compared to the 4,000mAh battery in the S24. Samsung highlights that this enhancement can extend battery life by several hours, particularly benefiting the device’s larger display. However, both models share identical charging capabilities: 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W wireless power-sharing.

Verdict

Priced at KES 91,000 during the launch in Kenya, the Galaxy S24 FE offers impressive value for a premium smartphone. It boasts strong processing power and a versatile triple-camera setup, including the same main sensor as the flagship Galaxy S24. However, the question arises: why would anyone opt for the slightly less capable S24 FE when the standard Galaxy S24 is available for just KES 99,000 at BrandCart at the time of writing?
