Safaricom Launches Academy to Train Fiber Optic Technicians

Safaricom recently introduced the Connect Academy, a new initiative aimed at providing high-quality training for fiber optic technicians. The announcement was made during the Connected Africa Summit 2024, reflecting Safaricom’s ongoing investment in fiber optic infrastructure across Kenya and Ethiopia. This initiative supports the ICT Authority’s plans to expand fiber networks, establish public Wi-Fi spots, and create Digital Village Smart Hubs throughout the region.

The academy is part of the Presidential DigiTalent Programme, which focuses on skill development through on-the-job coaching, mentorship, and certification, in collaboration with public and private sectors and Technical and Vocational Education and Training [TVET] institutions. Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, stated their goal to develop a world-class broadband talent pool to boost employment and career opportunities for Kenyan youth without higher education. The initial cohort of 200 trainees will begin their training in May, receiving weekly instruction from Safaricom engineers.

Empowering Tomorrow: Fawzia Ali Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer of Safaricom PLC, and Stanley Kamanguya, CEO of ICT Authority, join forces to sign a groundbreaking cooperation agreement for the Connect Academy, fostering innovation and connectivity at the Connected Africa Summit, Uhuru Gardens.

In partnership with the ICT Authority, the academy will evolve into a comprehensive training institution offering specialized programs for fiber optic and fixed wireless technicians. Trainees will acquire a mix of theoretical and practical skills necessary for efficient network implementation.

Stanley Kamanguya, CEO of the ICT Authority, emphasized the critical role of public-private partnerships in achieving digital transformation across Africa. He expressed gratitude towards Safaricom for leading this initiative, which is expected to significantly contribute to the technological empowerment and connectivity of the continent.
