Safaricom’s Tech Training for Inclusive Growth

Safaricom has unveiled a tech re-skilling program to train young Persons with Disabilities [PWDs] in digital skills. These skills will improve their employability. This new inclusive growth initiative is part of Safaricom’s efforts to promote inclusivity in embracing developments in the digital world.

The programme, currently in the pilot phase. It will see students with disabilities embark on a 23-week software engineering module at Moringa School. It will also include comprehensive career mentorship and coaching designed to equip participants with the skills needed to excel in the IT sector.

Inclusive Growth

“As we work towards becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030, we realise that we cannot leave anyone behind. Currently, persons with disabilities make up 3.3% of our workforce. We are keen to grow this number to 3.5% through such re-skilling initiatives.” Said Nyokabi Florence, Chief Human Resources Officer of Safaricom PLC.

The programme builds on the success of the IT Bridge Academy, which several organisations hosted in 2022. They include Sight Savers, the National Industrial Training Authority [NITA], United Disabled Persons of Kenya [UDPK], Three Talents, Accenture, and CISCO.

The IT Bridge Academy offered young job seekers with disabilities who have a passion for IT a chance to train and gain hands-on experience in the sector.

The training program is part of Safaricom’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts. It focuses on inclusive growth by attracting, retaining, and developing employees while fostering engagement with customers and the community.
