TikTok, working with Eveminet, has made great progress in Kenya through its #SaferTogether workshops, which began in October 2023. These workshops are designed to create a safe and supportive environment on the app for Kenya’s youth. So far, they have reached 116,355 people, including students, parents, and teachers, in 21 out of 47 counties in Kenya.
These efforts, including both in-person and online sessions, were especially focused during Safer Internet Month in February 2024, benefiting 56,020 learners. The “Train the Trainer” model used in these workshops helps spread important digital safety knowledge throughout communities.
Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, TikTok’s Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasizes the importance of teamwork in achieving safety and outlines plans to extend these safety education efforts to all of Kenya’s counties by September 2024. Evelyn Kasina, CEO of Eveminet, also highlights the goal of building a trustworthy and creative online community for TikTok users. This initiative includes working with the Kenya Scouts Association, the Kenya Association of International Schools, and Riara University to reach more young people.
In addition, TikTok has formed a Global Youth Council, including 15 teenagers from around the world, with two from Kenya. This council is part of TikTok’s effort to include young people’s views in its safety strategies. The council, which first met in December 2023 and again recently with TikTok’s CEO, is focusing on teen well-being and inclusion for 2024. They have also provided feedback on TikTok’s Youth Portal and the reporting and blocking processes on the app.
Jennifer Kaberi, CEO of Mtoto News, stresses the importance of including the perspectives of children and youth in shaping the digital world, especially those from traditionally marginalized areas. This approach ensures that young voices are not just heard but are also influential in designing a digital future that is safe and inclusive for all.
Through these initiatives, TikTok is leading the way in creating a safer, more inclusive online community, demonstrating a strong commitment to the safety and well-being of its users, particularly the youth in Kenya and globally.
