1,780 Young Scientists’ Projects to Tackle Climate Change

Young Scientists Kenya [YSK] has received 1,780 project abstracts for its 7th National Science and Technology Annual Exhibition 2024, marking a 138% increase from last year. The exhibition, scheduled from 19th to 23rd August 2024, will feature 200 students and 100 teachers showcasing projects, with 1,300 students attending virtually from 390 schools, including 5 special needs and 3 refugee schools.

Dr. Eng. Victor Mwongera, YSK National Director emphasized the theme, “Using STEM to Champion Climate Change Solutions.” The exhibition aims to inspire students to pursue STEM, showcase research, create linkages, and develop skills for further research and commercialization.

According to Ben Roberts, YSK Board Chairperson since its inception, YSK has reached over 250,000 students from more than 750 schools, including over 20 special needs schools, and created over 600 STEM networks. The initiative has involved more than 750 teachers and received over 1,000 student projects.

Micheál Martin, Irish Deputy Prime Minister praised the exhibition modeled after the Irish BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition [BT YSTE]. He noted BT YSTE’s influence on Ireland’s economy through innovation and STEM education. Martin expressed Ireland’s support for YSK, emphasizing the shared vision for educational excellence and innovation. He reiterated Ireland’s commitment to global cooperation and development, reflecting on the six years of support for YSK.

Additionally, YSK awarded 210 student winners, provided tertiary education scholarships to thirteen students, supported two students in obtaining trademarks for their projects, and conducted six national exhibitions and five STEM bootcamps. Isaac Muendo, the second-place winner in the 2019 Technology Category, co-founded Arifa Labs, a company developing cybersecurity solutions.
