Two Kenyan companies and one Ghanaian organization are among the 15 finalists vying for £1 million each in the prestigious 2024 Earthshot Prize. This international initiative focuses on climate and environmental innovation. It will reveal the winners at a grand awards ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa, on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
Representing Kenya are d.light, a leading provider of solar home systems, and Keep It Cool, which specializes in solar-powered refrigeration solutions. Joining them is GAYO, a youth-led waste management organization from Ghana. These three African finalists will compete alongside 12 others from six continents, including first-time participants from France, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Nepal.

The Earthshot Prize’s Expert Advisory Panel, a global network of over 100 professionals in conservation, science, business, and policy. Evaluated this year’s finalists after selecting them from nearly 2,500 nominees. The Prize seeks to discover, spotlight, and scale innovative solutions that align with the five key ‘Earthshots’ – ambitious goals aimed at protecting the planet:. Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate. The organization will award £1 million to five winners, one in each category.
Earthshot Prize Fellowship Programme
Prince William, alongside the esteemed Earthshot Prize Council, will select this year’s winners. In addition to the financial award. Each finalist will benefit from mentorship, technical support, and access to a global network of climate leaders and investors through the Earthshot Prize Fellowship Programme. This includes support from the Prize’s Global Alliance of Partners. It brings together influential businesses and environmental organizations committed to advancing climate solutions.
One notable member of this alliance is the Multichoice Group. They support the Earthshot Prize by implementing ambitious environmental changes and helping accelerate the growth of finalists’ solutions.
Since its inception in 2020, the Earthshot Prize has generated over £75 million in direct and in-kind support for its finalists. With the 2024 finalists, the total number of solutions recognized by the Prize reaches 60. This marks a significant milestone in its mission to uncover and elevate transformative climate innovations globally.
