Safaricom today marked its 25th anniversary, celebrating a quarter-century since its official launch on 23rd October, 2000. What began as a mobile service provider has evolved into a key player in Kenya’s digital economy, expanding access to communication, mobile money, and digital services across the region.

Over the years, Safaricom has grown to serve more than 50 million mobile subscribers in Kenya a reflection of strong consumer trust and partnerships that have shaped its journey. Its flagship mobile money platform, M-PESA, now used by over 35 million active customers, continues to play a transformative role in financial inclusion and entrepreneurship.

The company’s continued investment in technology has enhanced connectivity nationwide, with the rollout of 5G accelerating internet access and digital innovation. Safaricom’s network infrastructure now supports a broad range of sectors, including e-government, education, and commerce.
Regionally, Safaricom expanded into Ethiopia in 2022, extending M-PESA and digital services to over 10 million customers by August 2025 a milestone in its regional growth strategy.
Through its philanthropic initiatives under the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, the company continues to support programs in health, education, and environmental conservation, underscoring its commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development as it steps into its next chapter.
