Safaricom held its fifth regional farmer forum this month in Meru. However the underlying product it’s promoting, Bundle Ya Wakulima, already works anywhere in Kenya, not just in the counties getting a launch event. Any farmer can dial 54416# today and access it, regardless of whether their county has hosted a roadshow yet. The bundle folds together phone credit, mobile data, basic health and funeral insurance, farm input discounts and access to a WhatsApp farming assistant into one purchase, priced from KES 40 a day up to KES 6,500 for six months.

How Bundle Ya Wakulima Pricing Actually Breaks Down
The cheapest daily option gets a farmer 250MB of data, 20 minutes of calls and free WhatsApp, and nothing else. Insurance, farm input discounts and the “Seeds of Gold” content package only appear once a farmer commits to the weekly tier or longer, starting at KES 300. In other words, Bundle Ya Wakulima’s insurance and advisory pitch, the part getting top billing at these launch events, is really a feature of the pricier plans rather than the entry-level one.
Why Insurance Comes With a Catch
That structure makes sense commercially, since insuring someone for a single day would be impractical. It also means the “integrated solution” framing oversells what a cash-strapped smallholder buying daily bundles actually receives. Safaricom’s Fawzia Ali described the bundle as connectivity, protection and growth support bundled together, and for weekly-plan customers and above that description holds up reasonably well. For farmers stretching a single day’s budget, though, the product is closer to ordinary airtime with a friendlier name attached to it.
Whether Bundle Ya Wakulima meaningfully changes farming outcomes will depend on how many farmers can actually afford to buy in at the tier where the real benefits start.
