Liebert EFC Cuts Data Center Energy Use by 19%

Vertiv has launched a major upgrade to its thermal management lineup with the new Vertiv™ Liebert EFC cooling unit. Designed for data centres, including colocation and cloud services. The system is now available in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa [EMEA] with cooling capacities ranging from 150 to 450 kW.

The Liebert EFC unit combines indirect air-to-air heat exchange and evaporative cooling in one solution. A patented polymer heat exchanger and advanced low-GWP [Global Warming Potential] compressor technology improve energy efficiency by up to 19% over older models. It also offers a partial Power Usage Effectiveness [pPUE] as low as 1.05, making it highly energy-efficient.

Energy-Efficient Cooling System

A key feature of the system is its flexibility. Using smart software controls, data centre operators can adjust how much power or water the unit uses. This depends on the site’s specific conditions. This enables maximum use of free cooling and reduces environmental impact. Some models even operate without water. Using a full direct expansion [DX] backup and remote condenser, maintaining reliability with complete water independence.

According to Sam Bainborough, Vice President of Thermal Business EMEA at Vertiv, “As sustainability becomes a bigger priority for businesses, the Liebert EFC offers a smart, flexible solution that reduces resource use without compromising performance.”

The system meets strict environmental regulations, including the EU F-Gas regulation [2024/573] and IPCC AR4 guidelines. It is designed for scalability, ease of maintenance, and long-lasting durability. Its polymer heat exchanger resists corrosion better than aluminum and works with a wider variety of water qualities.

At its core, the system is powered by Vertiv™ Liebert® iCOM™ controls. These intelligent algorithms switch automatically between cooling modes for maximum efficiency and coordinate multiple units to function as a single, optimized system—no extra plant management system needed.

Overall, the next-gen Liebert EFC offers an energy-efficient, flexible, and future-ready cooling solution for environmentally conscious data centres.
