MSME Cyber Resilience Gets a Shared Security Team

Safaricom brought leaders together in Nairobi this week for its fourth annual Cybersecurity Summit on AI. Speakers explored how artificial intelligence helps defenders while also giving scammers new tools like deepfakes and automated fraud. Kenya’s national cyber response team detected 11.12 billion threat events last financial year, a 29 percent rise from 8.62 billion. One quieter theme ran through the day: MSME cyber resilience, meaning how small firms can stay safe and recover quickly.

Why MSME Cyber Resilience Matters So Much

Micro, small and medium enterprises account for about 70 percent of Kenya’s GDP, according to the summit announcement. Many of these businesses lack the money or staff to build a full security team of their own. Safaricom says its managed monitoring service and secure business network let owners borrow that expertise instead of building it. That approach could make MSME cyber resilience realistic for a corner shop as much as for a large company.

What Tested Habits Add Beyond Technology

Summit sessions stressed that tools alone do not protect a business, because people and habits matter just as much. Participants practised live scenarios covering ransomware, AI-based threat detection and how to respond when an incident begins. A security-aware team learns to spot unusual activity and double-check risky requests before acting on them. Those simple habits give MSME cyber resilience a human layer that no software update can fully replace.

Group CEO Peter Ndegwa said AI brings real opportunity, but that opportunity has to be built on trust. He added that security should be built into digital services from the start, not added afterwards. Shared standards and cooperation across sectors, he said, keep digital progress safe, inclusive and worthy of customer confidence. If small firms join that effort, MSME cyber resilience could become one of Kenya’s quiet digital strengths.
