Powering NTT DATA Nairobi with Solar Energy

NTT DATA is installing a solar energy system at its new Nairobi headquarters. This move is expected to cut its reliance on grid electricity by more than one-third.

The project comes amid a broader regional push toward clean energy and sustainability. with solar, hydro, and carbon market initiatives gaining traction across East Africa. Many global companies, including NTT DATA, are adjusting operations to align with environmental goals.

Speaking at the opening of the new offices at The Cube on Riverside Drive. NTT DATA East Africa Managing Director Richard Hechle said sustainability is now central to the company’s business approach. The company aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement target.

“This isn’t just about reducing costs,” Hechle said. “We’re building resilience, cutting emissions, and adapting to a fast-changing world.”

New facility supports AI-driven workspaces and local digital talent

The new office is equipped with smart meeting rooms and digital infrastructure designed for hybrid work and collaboration. It features AI tools for transcription, video conferencing, and room automation. They are all powered by platforms such as Cisco Board Pro and LG digital signage.

Hechle said the upgrades reflect a shift in East Africa’s tech ecosystem toward energy efficiency and smarter work environments. “Clients today expect action on sustainability and inclusivity, not just words,” he added.

NTT DATA Middle East and Africa CEO Alan Turnley-Jones described the Nairobi office as a key step in offering scalable and ethical tech solutions across sectors like banking, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Turnley-Jones emphasized the company’s investment in AI, including Smart AI Agent™ and an industry-tailored AI ecosystem, noting their potential to drive digital transformation in areas such as fraud detection, claims automation, and regulatory compliance.

He added that ethical AI, data governance, and strategic partnerships must guide Africa’s digital growth. NTT DATA is also supporting local digital skills development through training programs and partnerships with organizations like Mistral AI.

The launch event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, office tours, and discussions on how technology and renewable energy can support East Africa’s future growth.
