TikTok Expands Safety Measures for Teens

TikTok is rolling out new features to help families encourage healthier digital habits for teens. As part of its commitment to online safety measures, these updates enhance Family Pairing, giving parents greater oversight while promoting mindful screen time.

TikTok Safety Measures
Key Updates:
  • Time Away Scheduling: Parents can set screen-free periods, like during school hours or bedtime. Teens can request extra time, but parents have the final say.
  • Expanded Family Visibility: Parents can now see who their teen follows, who follows them, and block accounts to support open discussions about online interactions.
  • Proactive Reporting Alerts: Teens who report a video for violating TikTok’s rules can choose to notify a trusted adult, even without Family Pairing enabled.
  • New Wind-Down Feature: Teens under 16 using TikTok after 10 PM will receive a full-screen reminder with calming music. If they continue, a stronger prompt will follow.

With these additions, Family Pairing now includes over 15 customizable safety and well-being features, allowing parents to tailor their teen’s TikTok experience.

Strengthening Digital Safety Measures in Kenya
#SaferTogether Campaign Milestones

Since launching in 2023, TikTok’s #SaferTogether initiative has made significant progress in Kenya, educating over 390,000 students, 6,504 parents, and 5,307 teachers on responsible online engagement. Partnering with Eveminet Communication Solutions Limited, TikTok continues to collaborate with educators, civil society, and government agencies to prioritize online safety.

By 2025, the initiative aims to expand to 42 counties, reinforcing TikTok’s commitment to digital literacy and user protection across Kenya.

Kenya Joins Global Youth Council Expansion

TikTok is also expanding its Global Youth Council in 2025. Initially launched in 2023, the council gives young users a voice in shaping platform policies. This year, membership has nearly doubled to 28 representatives from 15 countries, including new participants from Nigeria, Cameroon, Canada, Qatar, and Australia. Kenya remains part of the council, continuing to contribute insights on safety and inclusivity.

TikTok remains dedicated to ensuring a secure and positive environment for young users. Through enhanced parental controls, strategic partnerships, and youth engagement, the platform continues to evolve with user well-being at its core.
